Renunciation of citizenship of Bosnia and Herzegovina

Unfortunately, renunciation of citizenship of Bosnia and Herzegovina has become ordinary event.

BiH citizens withdraw citizenship for a simple reason - enrollment in the citizenship of the country they have been physically present for a longer period of time, if there is no option for retaining current citizenship.

Many of our citizens are willing to integrate into the "new" society and enjoy greater rights, so gaining citizenship of the country where they reside is often the key for various doors. That could bring them more job and social opportunities, so for that kind of reasons we can understand them.

The status of Bosnian emigrants was largely resolved through the acquisition of citizenship of the host country, or even permanent or temporary residence permit. In most countries, there have been no registered persons from Bosnia and Herzegovina with refugee status for many years, as most of them have long been integrated and socialized in the life processes of the host countries.

According to the latest UNHCR data, at the end of 2019, a total of 16,845 persons from Bosnia and Herzegovina with refugee status were registered worldwide. The largest number of registered refugees from Bosnia and Herzegovina is in Serbia (49%), followed by France, Switzerland and Germany.

The number of citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with permanent or temporary residence, according to available data for fourteen receiving countries, is 470,945. This number represents Bosnian citizens who have only the citizenship of Bosnia and Herzegovina and who have not acquired the citizenship of the receiving state, nor do have dual citizenship.
